An Evening for Happy Tour

In front of an almost full World Trade Centre in Stockholm, Calle Wollgård and Christofer Johansson told the story about their fantastic journey by bike from Sweden to Phuket in Thailand.
It was very inspiring and amazing to hear about the trip, from planning to the finish line.
A journey that raised SEK 370,000 to Happy child and Barnhem – WOW!

It was wonderful to hear that the world is good and there are lots of friendly people out there in our harsh world. If we all can remember that and treat our fellow humans with warmth and trust, what a wonderful world we would have.

It feels like yesterday was a beginning of a new adventure.
Thanks Calle and Christofer you for coming and give us hope and energy.

An Evening for Happy Child in memory of the family Janson-Falk

Friday, November 7 World Trade Center Stockholm was filled with with friends of Happy Child who came to honor the memory of John, Sara, Matilda, Eleanor, Josephine and Lukas. It was a magical evening with flashbacks, greetings and confidence in the future, and our beloved angels watched over us throughout the evening.

Folke Ryden gave a wonderful speech about not only survive but to live. To live means not only continuing to breathe but filling every breath with meaning - and this evening was filled with people who loves life.

Lotta talked about how everyone in the Happy Child choosed life by starting the Happy Child in loving memory of John, Sara, Matilda, Eleanor, Josephine and Lukas and to pass on the happiness, joy and love that they had so much of by helping children who do not have the same opportunities.

Sussi explained how our Angels lives on in all the children at Barnhem, as that they now get the chance to give themselves a happy and better life.

A big thanks to Conny Noremark who, together with Hans De Geer of Gangsters Post put together this extremely beatutiful film with greetings from near and dear to our angels.

The evening also consists of good food, good wine, beautiful mingle and the warm care of the staff at the World Trade Center Stockholm.
We need to thank our great lottery salesman who sold lottery tickets tiredless all evening.
And of course to all fantastic companies that donated prices for the lottery and in so many other ways helped to make this evening possible.

The proceeds from the evening will go to the refurbishment of Barnhem.
For more information go to the Refurbishment Project.

Thank you, Elsa!

Thank you, Elsa!

We at Happy Child want to thank Elsa, who organized a flea market together with her friends Clara and Sofia to benefit our children at Barnhem.
The flea market raisedUSD 320, which translates into 480 dinners for one child at Barnhem.
An impressive sum by an impressive team, who pulled off this event on their very own!

Many thanks for this fantastic effort!

The Barnhem Refurbishment Project.

The Barnhem Refurbishment Project.

We got to know Barrie Buck when he was looking for a worthy cause for his company to help and part sponsor. He came to visit us and he liked our home, our children and our way of thinking, but he could also note the condition of the buildings and grounds.

He contacted his friend John Grendon and asked him to do a survey of our home and it confirmed there was a large number of defects that needed to be addressed and that it was better to knock down the existing structures and build new ones than to try to fix and repair them.

Now these two wonderful gentlemen decided to actually do it, rebuild Barnhem – they have started The Barnhem Refurbishment Project. The idea is to get as many companies and people involved as possible so all together can help our children to get a better and safer home.

If you would like to make a donation to this fantastic project, please mark your donation with "Rebuild Barnhem."

Happy Birthday and Thank you to NIna Rydén 50 years

Our heartfelt congratulations and deepest thanks to Nina Rydén on her 50th birthday!

As the special event calls for, Nina celebrated her 50th birthday with a dinner complete with dancing. In lieu of personal gifts, she wished for donations to Barnhem.
Not surprisingly, beautiful Nina is surrounded by friends, and her thoughtful wish turned into almost $3,000.

Many thanks, sweet Nina!

An Evening for Happy Child 2012

On November 8th An Evening for Happy Child was hosted at the Oscar Church parish hall with 180 dear friends, engaged in Happy Child’s labor for the children at the orphanage in Muang Mai.

This year, 25 SEK was in focus and how much difference 25 SEK can do for the kids at the orphanage. As an example, for 25 SEK, the price of a Magnum ice cream, a child at the orphanage gets 6 dinners.
So in the spirit of the 25 SEK, people could buy a glass of wine for 25 SEK and or they could buy lottery tickets to win one of the great prizes for 25 SEK per ticket.  During the evening, we sold all 500 tickets - in other words, just the tickets raised 3000 dinners! The sausages Lithells sponsored us with were served from an excellent hot dog cart that we had borrowed from Rentevent.

Happy Child's chairman, Lotta Noremark, welcomed everyone and then handed over to the amazing Helene Benno, who had taken time off from other duties to help us keep up the evening as the evening's emcee.

The orphanage had put together a video greeting for all the guests in honor of the evening, where Hans talked about the orphanage today and what the future holds. The two oldest children at the orphanage, Neng and Bonut, talked about themselves and their future plans. Plans for the future, they are able to have today, thanks to the support and commitment of others!

Kjell Bergqvist told about all his visits to the orphanage and how these have contributed to his commitment to the children there.
Nathalie Bergqvist, who has visited the orphanage several times with her father, provided the musical entertainment along with Julia Koponen, who has put together two concerts for the benefit of the children, and David Wagner, who has volunteered at the orphanage.
In addition to these three, authentic American folk music was performed by the amazing Hot Corn.
Yes, there was a lot of music - and for music to be heard, you need great equipment, equipment that Rickard Åhsted at Ljud och Bild Media let us use free of charge, thanks to Tommy Lundqvist for finding these guys. Many thanks to Hannes Hultkrantz also for providing the loudspeaker system!

To add some extra spice to the evening Fredrik Boltes had traveled up from Jönköping to make our guests intrigued with his illusions and tricks. Since he had recently been visiting the orphanage, he too could tell us a little about his experiences there.

The atmosphere was very warm and emotional. No one walked away untouched by the work of Happy Child, or by the children who live there. In other words, it was an incredibly successful evening.

We want to thank everyone who participated in an evening for Happy Child! It was you that made this evening possible.
We also want to say a huge thank you, to all the wonderful people and businesses that contributed raffle prizes;

In this year's lottery, you could win two trips to Phuket thanks to Fritidsresor, PA och Co offered a dinner for two, Point 65 offered kayaking for five people, Nescafe Dolco Gusto contributed a Dolce Gusto coffee machine, Kneisel a pair of skis, FAB Stockholm offered a free optional treatment, Peder Molin contributed three fine bottles of wine to be enjoyed by a lucky winner, Peder Molin and Team Winemaster also donated wine tasting for two people,
Scalateatern offered two tickets to the show Marilyn, Dansmuseet contributed some goodies that were raffled off in three different bags, Anne Andersen contributed four orphanage bracelets, a lucky winner got gift certificates for 1,000 SEK at Fredells – this donated by Nife Entreprenad, Elsa Noremark had crocheted a very nice iPhone case, Fanny Modig had baked 2 Kg of her finest cookies for one lucky winner, Someone won this year's Christmas concert with Euterpes Chamber Choir.
We were privileged to give away a fine woolen blanket, a linen tablecloth and traditional Christmas style table decorations donated by Ann-Charlotte Jåfs. We raffled off five book packages from Natur och Kultur and another three book packages from Max Ström, we also raffled off products, as well as a gift certificate for dyeing and hair styling, by Björn Axen, someone walked away with a lovely set of Faber Castell pencils and, last but not least, someone had the good fortune to win a day with stylist Maria Lindqvist and 1,000 SEK to shop for that Maria kindly offered.

Happy walk did it!

On December 17—53 days, 900 km and approx. $33,000 later—our Happy Walk heroes crossed the finish line as they reached Barnhem.

Excitement and anticipation hung in the air as we readied ourselves for the ride to Sarasin Bridge, the bridge between the mainland and Phuket, where we would meet up with them.
We had been waiting for a little while when the first voice broke through the air, declaring "I can see them!,” or rather "Hen puag-khao daai!,” at which point children and adults alike raced to catch up to them. Tears were shed as everyone hugged everyone—it was an amazing feeling!
Once we'd collected ourselves, we wanted to show our support for the group by accompanying them as they set out to walk the final kilometers to Barnhem. We were tired after only a few kilometers, phew!

A Tradition in the Making

Hosted a second time around, An Evening for Happy Child was as successful this year as last year. Björn Wetterling kindly let us borrow Wetterling Gallery and warmth filled the gallery as we welcomed dear friends, who all share a deep commitment to the children at Barnhem Muang Mai.

This year it fell on Sussi and Hans to speak about Barnhem, the children, and the work on site. They were assisted by three of their fantastic volunteers who have been involvedworking with the children at the home – Sophie, Anna and Ulla. Serving as moderator during the evening, Marianne Rundström, from the Swedish TV show Good morning, Sweden, also played a supporting role during this presentation.

Just like last year, guests at An Evening for Happy Child were treated to some lovely singing by three song birds– Julia Koponen, Natalie Bergqvist, and Elin Rosén Wetterholm.

And while we were treated to the song numbers we were also treated to various delicacies and good wine donated by Kent Jansen at Delikatessgrossisten, www.delikatessgrossisten.se
www.kvalitetsvin.se/

The raffle was also a hit, thanks to all of the wonderful gifts that had been donated.
And this year, just like the first initial year of this event, the fabulous first prize was an airline ticket to Phuket, for a visit to Barnhem Muang Mai. Many thanks to everyone who donated prizes and to everyone who bought raffle tickets.

We think you get the picture: The evening of November 11 was everything we had hoped for, and then some.

Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who found the time to attend. As a group you contributed not only to the wonderful atmosphere, but also by raising SEK 42,000 ($6,000) through the sale of tickets at the door and raffle tickets.

We are also greatly indebted to Wetterling Gallery, Kent Jansen, Delikatessgrossisten, Marianne Rundström, Julia Koponen, Nathalie Bergqvist, Elin Rosén Wetterholm, Sophie Hamrin, Anna Karlsson, Ulla Anlander, Jonas Franke, Dennis Eriksson, Emelie Benson, Dansmuseet, Fredells, Fritidsresor Sverige AB, Granit, Katti Kjellvertz, Starkat, Lasse Berghagen, Lasse Samuelsson, Lifeline, Lotta Wetterholm Friskvård, Nikon, Nils-Olof Olsson, Kneissel Sverige AB, Pocketshop, Ringside Event, Scalateatern.

Linnéa Aaro from Boden single-handedly collected SEK 10,000 for Barnhem

After having watched the Swedish TV program “This Is Your Life” featuring Kjell Bergqvist, Linnéa Aaro decided that she would support Barnhem Muang Mai as her student project.

She collected all that money by redeeming empty cans for money, baking and selling cakes, printing leaflets, collecting money on the street, contacting local organizations, and arranging a photo exhibit with her own photographs.

What a drive – once again we at Happy Child are at a loss for words to convey our admiration!
Thank you, Linnéa, for choosing us!

Read Linnéa’s own story of her work.

My name is Linnéa Aaro and I’m currently 18 years old, I live in a small town called Boden, which is in the Norrbotten County. Just like all the other last-year students at Björknäs High School I had to do a student project. I quickly chose to support Barnhem Muang Mai after having seen the program “This Is Your Life,” starring Kjell Bergqvist, who spoke of his friend Sussi Janson, who lost her children in the devastating Tsunamiin 2004. Sussi entered the studio and spoke about her difficult time and Barnhem. Her story deeply moved me, but it also inspired me and motivated me to do this project; she is so strong and became my role model even though I’ve never met her.

Many children lost their dear and near ones to the strong forces of the water in 2004, I have many close friends who have grown up without one or both parents and I have felt their pain. I cannot say that I know what it is like to lose a parent or a child…but I lost my grandmother to cancer and that was very painful. I have experienced sorrow, I’m experiencing a loss. This is also a contributing factor to why I chose to support Muang Mai in particular.

I think it’s very important to help children have a good childhood, since the children are our future. All children have the right to live and to live a dignified life with love, heat, food, education, shelter, and much more.
I did not carry out this project only to help others and to contribute to a “better world,” rather, I did it to a great extent for myself. I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle this project on my own and that my strong will can take me far. Through my project I’ve gotten people to provide help and to experience that they are actually contributing something. I have inspired younger students to collect money for charity and have tried to influence those who only talk without matching their words with action.

Initially, I drafted a plan and according to our school we are supposed to spend 100 hours working on the project but I’ve used about 200. It involved a lot of planning and tons of setbacks… I learned for example that you have to take things as they come and not plan every little detail, anything can happen.
I chose to take my previous fundraising experiences and then upgrade and modernize those methods. I arranged a photo exhibit to benefit Barnhem, I took photos and sent the picture files to two companies, jagsyns.se and kbfoto.se, that enlarged the 20 photos to A3-format, which I then sold at the Cultural Center for SEK 200. I really enjoyed being able to weave my greatest interest – photography – into the project, I raised good money, and made good photography contacts that may be useful in the future.

My goal was to reach SEK 6,000, but I was able to reach SEK 10,000, which I never thought when I begun the project, I’ve always heard from my parents that you can handle anything you want…those were just words to me. But now I’ve proven to myself that it’s true, you can actually handle anything you want…

I used to be a bit shy about calling and making contact with people but now I don’t have any problems with that at all, I actually enjoy it. As I thought at the beginning, doing a fundraising that requires you to be active socially every day has boosted my self confidence and self esteem.

There are many people who have helped me with this project! Among these are the Red Cross, which contributed with as much as SEK 3.000; my mother, who donated her beautiful water color artwork to the exhibit, ICA, kbfoto.se, jagsyns.se, Fagernässkola, Bo Strömbäck, who lent us the Cultural Center; private individuals who helped with e.g. the exhibit and provided support when things looked bleak; Hans Almqvist lent us his bakery; Stadins Glas in Boden supplied passe-partouts for the water color artwork; Swedbank; my childhood friend Emma Nilsson, who helped me with technical things and with editing the leaflet. And last but not least my advisor Helena Carolin and obviously Sussi Janson, who made this possible from the very beginning. THANK YOU!

A heartfelt CONGRATS! and many, many THANKS!!

A heartfelt CONGRATS! and many, many THANKS!!

On December 30, Josefin and Rasmus sent an e-mail to Sussi at Barnhem. After having watched the Swedish TV shows"This is Your Life" and "Swedish Heroes," they wanted to help.
They were going to get married and had decided that in lieu of wedding gifts, they wouldlike for their guests to donate money to Happy Child and Barnhem. And that's exactly what happened.
On June 11 they said "I do" to one another in Sweden, where the radiant sunbeams seemed to match the happy glow of the bridal couple. The weather was gorgeous and the bride and groom were surrounded by family members and friends. The honored guests were as generous and compassionate as the beautiful young couple, which meant that when the bride and groom were joined as one, their relatives and friends donated more than $6,000 to Happy Child.

What a wonderful gift!

Music for Life – What a Success!

Beautiful music was followed by enthusiastic applause on March 3, when the charity concert Music for Life was held.
The concert had been arranged as an independent project by Julia Koponen, who is in her third and last year at the Cathedral High School in Skara in the Music and Production Program.

We at Happy Child struggle to find the words to convey our admiration for Julia’s wonderful work.
She had filled the stage with 16 talented youths and a wonderful 13-member children’s choir. Together, these young artists provided hours of musical entertainment as part of the sold-out event at the Skövde Municipal Theater.
That would have been fantastic in and of itself, but in addition, the concert raised SEK 42,643 for Barnhem and Happy Child.

Thanks, Julia – you are awesome!

Read Julia’s own story about the concert and all the effort that went into making it a reality.

JMy name is Julia Koponen, I am 18 years old, and I am a third-year student in the Music and Production program at the Cathedral High School in Skara. All students who are in their third and final year do a project, and I decided to do some form of concert.

I was inspired by the TV show Glee and started planning a big concert with a lot of flashy numbers and dancing. Donating money to a charity is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I would therefore turn it into a charity concert!
Personally I had very high expectations of what I’d be able to accomplish; I was sure that the concert would yield a profit.

When I had to select a recipient I knew that I didn’t want to donate to any of the largest and most well-known organizations, since money often disappears along the way due to intermediaries, etc.
I had the idea from the start that I’d donate it to some place in Thailand, since I’ve been there for vacation and I’ve seen what it’s like. Those who are poor are truly poor and the Thai are such wonderful people, it is awful that so many are in such a bad state. I went on Google and searched for an orphanage in Thailand. At first I found only pages in Thai, but then I came upon Pernilla Wahlgren’s blog. She had written about Happy Child and had links to the web page. Once I’d read it all I decided on the spot that that’s where the money would be sent, because that’s where they would truly be put to good use.

Once that decision had been made, I could start planning the actual concert.
I picked March 3, 2011 as the date and tentatively booked the Skövde Municipal Theater.
Coming up with a good name for the concert was difficult, it had to mean something.
Finally my mother and I came up with the perfect name, Music for Life.
It was good all around and now that we had a name, I could get to work for real!
Sponsors needed to be found, bank accounts needed to be opened, fellow crew members needed to be contacted, and songs had to be rehearsed. There were a lot of things that needed to be taken care of!
I put together my own children’s choir made up of 13 kids, who came to my house once a week to sing, and I contacted newspapers and radio stations to market Music for Life. I was on Radio Skaraborg, as part of the program called På tu man hand (In Private), I had an article published in the local paper, Skaraborgs Allehanda, SLA, as well as in the newspaper Äntligen (Finally), and I had two sponsored ads in SLA. That marketing helped me tremendously in terms of selling tickets!

I had hoped to find sponsors who would be able to cover the fixed costs, and the companies that sponsored me with money were:
Budproffset
OFFECCT
Elins Esplanad
Asitis
Inexchange
Coop Forum
PLS
Håkans Allservice

Some companies also sponsored me by providing food for the crew members, stage outfits, prizes for the raffle, advertisement, a rehearsal facility, and the like:
SLA
Elgiganten
FÖRR
YAP
Restaurang Riviera
Maxi Stormarknad
McDonalds
Livingroom Sports and Harmony
Skövde Municipal School of Music
Indiska
BikBok
Showkanalen
Lions Skultorp

The band Showkanalen was the accompanying band during the concert and they are also one of my sponsors.
Emcees were Cecilia, Bodil, Elina, and Johanna from the band called Timotej and I am very grateful for their contribution, they did a fabulous job!

The concert was about 1.5 hrs long, with the following songs and soloists:
Show Must Go On – Everyone
Nothing Compares 2 U – Amanda Larsson
Think – Christine Nordström Hames
21 Guns – Amanda Koponen, Julia Koponen, Erica Jönsson
Don’t Stop Believing – Oskar Persson
Inte jag, inte kär – Jonna Sandén
Shackles – Erica Jönsson
Tell Me Why – Children’s Choir
Disco Inferno – Julia Koponen, Oskar Persson
Dear Mr. President – Amanda Nilsson Bornhall
Shake Your Tail Feather – Richard Jansson
Hallelujah – Alex Kvarnestig, Olivia Åhman, Julia Koponen
Waka Waka – Amanda Koponen
Almost Lover – Mathilde Björklund
Proud Mary – Julia Koponen
You Raise Me Up – Anders Stenholm, Erica Jönsson
We Are The World – Children’s Choir, Timotej + Everyone

After the concert, several people contacted me, my relatives, and the Skövde Municipal Theater because they wanted to donate more money afterwards as well.
It was also possible to make an extra donation in the foyer before and after the concert.
Several people came to the theater to buy a ticket in person but had to leave and go home, but many of them still paid the ticket price of SEK 100 as a donation.

Working with Music for Life has been demanding, but also educational and above all a fun experience. It was an amazing feeling to stand there on the stage and get standing ovations from nearly 500 people. I cannot describe the feeling of knowing at the same time that children on the other side of the globe will see their lives improved thanks to my initiative.
